Pleomorphic Adenoma

Definition of Pleomorphic Adenoma

The definition of pleomorphic adenoma can be understood by taking a look at the constituent terms. Pleomorphic is the name given to a group of cells that project a different kind of growth and cytology in different cases. Adenoma is defined as a minor tumor that is generally benign and does not pose major health concerns. The combined term of pleomorphic adenoma stands for a tumor that arises in the parotid gland in the body. The pleomorphic adenoma is seen to be the most common type of tumor that arises in the salivary glands, and the most common one that impacts the parotid gland. Here is a close look at the condition of pleomorphic adenoma, and its impact on the human body.

Impact of the Parotid Gland Tumor

The impact of the parotid gland tumor is the affect that is exerted by the pleomorphic adenoma onto the body. Usually, apart from the growth, there are no major symptoms which are associated with this condition, and you would find that the parotid gland tumor is accidentally discovered in most cases. The biggest cause behind the development of a parotid gland tumor is related to the improper drainage of saliva, resulting from the blockages present in the salivary duct. Due to the accumulation of saliva, the pleomorphic adenoma can develop in this region. Apart from these causes, smoking and exposure to radiation are some other reasons that are related to the pleomorphic adenoma. While the discovery of the pleomorphic adenoma is accidental, a proper diagnosis of the parotid gland swelling is required. CT scan and MRI are the viable candidates for conducting the diagnosis and a biopsy might be required to analyze the malignancy of the pleomorphic adenoma. Once the proper diagnosis has been done for the parotid gland tumor, it is important that pleomorphic adenoma treatment is carried out.
